1947 Henri Cartier-Bresson met Simone de Beauvoir for a Portrait. The writer asked him how long it would take and he answered: «Longer than the dentist, but shorter than the psychoanalyst!» For me the great pleasure in taking portraits is the chance to get to know my subject very intensely in a very short amount of time. Ususally when you meet me for a sitting you'll see that I did my homework, know what you do for a living, and am nice to talk to. And then, maybe between two sentences, my camera comes up and I take a picture that quite often shows the real you. The german artist Markus Lüpertz once told me: «I never liked photography, but the way you look into a persons soul and grab that image is special». One evening I spent with the actress Christine Kaufmann who was married to Tony Curtis in Hollywoods heyday. She told me fantastically endless stories about that era and compared my style to Yul Brynner while I snapped her reflection in a mirror.
One night I went to shoot Haruki Murakami and met this amazing woman with an old Polaroid camera. We talked for twenty minutes before I found out that it was Patti Smith. For moments like this you become a photographer.

Die Schriftstellerin hatte noch etwas vor und fragte HCB wie lange er denn brauchen würde. «Länger als ein Zahnarzt, aber kürzer als eine Psychotherapie!» Wenn Sie sich mit mir zum Portrait treffen nehme ich Ihnen gleich die Angst vor dem Bohrer, und machmal wird das Gespräch auch analytisch. Was zählt ist wir kommen schnell zu einem guten Bild. Markus Lüpertz (erinnern Sie mich daran die Geschichte aus der Schiffergesellschaft zu erzählen) mag eigentlich keine Fotografie, macht für mich aber eine Ausnahme. Volker Schlöndorff hielt meine Fuji für eine Leica und nannte sie eine Fälschung. Christine Kaufmann erzählte genug Legenden von Hollywoods Goldener Zeit für ein Buch während ich sie im Garderobenspiegel fotografierte. Patti Smith traf ich bei Springer in Berlin, sie sofortbildfotografierte mich mit Haruki Murakami. Der Literaturkritiker Denis Scheck am Strand, und mit der alten Kamera von Günter Grass.
